Search Federal BOP Releases

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities nationwide, use the BOP locator only when the person served a federal sentence. No federal prison was identified in Pulaski County, yet a federal case connected to the county can lead to confinement elsewhere. A past release date and noncustody statement apply to BOP custody only. They do not prove release from the regional jail, state corrections, federal pretrial custody, immigration custody, or later supervision.

BOP Release Record Scope

The Bureau of Prisons operates a nationwide federal prison system. Its locator generally includes federal prisoners released from 1982 onward. A Pulaski County arrest does not place someone in BOP automatically. Ordinary adult local detention belongs to New River Valley Regional Jail, while a Virginia state prison sentence belongs to VADOC.

BOP becomes relevant after a federal sentence and designation to federal prison. A locator result may remain available after release and show a past Release Date with “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” wording. That supports the end of BOP custody. BOP itself warns that the person could be in another law-enforcement system or on supervision.

Search a Federal Release

The official BOP Inmate Locator offers identifier and name routes. An identifier search can use a BOP register number or the DCDC, FBI, or INS identifier offered by the form. A biographical search uses name and can be narrowed with age, sex, and race. Exact identifiers reduce mistaken matches.

  1. Confirm that a federal sentence, not only a local arrest, is involved.
  2. Search by BOP register number when it is known.
  3. Otherwise search the full legal name and apply accurate narrowing fields.
  4. Compare the Name, Register Number, Age, Race, Sex, Release Date, and Location fields.
  5. Save the result date and verify with federal records when the public entry is insufficient.

A result marked not in BOP custody and carrying a past release date is useful historical evidence. It does not explain where the person went, whether federal supervised release followed, or whether another custodian later acted. A no-result also does not resolve a federal pretrial episode because many such people are under U.S. Marshals authority rather than serving a BOP sentence.

Important: “Not in BOP custody” is not a universal statement that no local, state, immigration, or supervision status exists.

BOP Release Records Contact

The nationwide locator is the public starting point. For a more detailed historical fact, seek the existing BOP record that documents release, transfer, or designation. Identify the full name, register number, approximate confinement and release dates, and precise document or field. A broad request for every record is more likely to create cost and delay.

Ask for the custody or release record rather than asking staff to decide whether a person is now free. An old BOP release can be followed by federal supervised release, an immigration process, a state case, or new custody. The federal court docket is the proper source for the sentence and later supervision orders.

Displayed dates can also be affected by recalculation. The BOP locator information notes that First Step Act and other calculation changes may temporarily affect information. Recheck a time-sensitive result and preserve the retrieval date. A historical date should not be copied forward as present status.

BOP Release Result Fields

The locator result table can show Name, Register Number, Age, Race, Sex, Release Date, and Location. Those fields help match the person and understand BOP's published status. The register number is the strongest bridge to the federal case and prison record because names can repeat.

“Released” means BOP no longer reports the person in its prison custody for that record. “Not in BOP Custody” is similarly limited. A Location field may be blank or use nonfacility wording after release. Do not turn it into a claim about residence or physical whereabouts.

Register number
The BOP identifier tied to the federal prisoner record.
Release date
The date BOP publishes for the end of the covered custody episode.
Federal supervised release
Court-ordered community supervision after a federal prison term, administered outside BOP custody.
Designation
The federal facility assignment for a sentenced prisoner.

Note: Match the register number and federal docket before relying on a common-name result.

USMS Is Not BOP

The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner-operations page explains how the agency holds and transports many federal defendants from court-ordered custody through acquittal or conviction and transfer to BOP. A federal pretrial detainee may be physically housed in a local or regional jail under an arrangement without appearing as a sentenced BOP prisoner. BOP's no-result cannot prove that episode ended.

USMS does not provide a public name-based historical release locator comparable to BOP. Its internal tracking is not a public roster. Use the federal court docket, the clerk, or a targeted USMS records inquiry. Pulaski County lies in the Western District of Virginia. The USMS Roanoke headquarters is at 210 Franklin Road SW, Suite 210, Roanoke, VA 24011-2216, telephone 540-857-2230.

For a federal pretrial custody trail, begin with the Western District court case and identify the detention or release order before approaching the custodian. The Roanoke USMS office lists business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but it does not operate a public historical name search. A focused inquiry should include the case number, approximate dates, and the particular transfer or custody record sought. Physical departure from a contracted jail bed may mean return to Marshals control, movement to another contract facility, or transfer into BOP custody. It should not be labeled a community release unless the court and receiving-custody records support that conclusion.

A transfer from USMS to BOP begins a different custody stage. Release from a contracted local bed back to Marshals control is also not community release. Follow the sending and receiving records.

Federal Release and Supervision

Federal supervised release is imposed by the federal court and administered through federal probation. It is not federal parole and is not continued BOP imprisonment. A past BOP release date can coexist with a current supervised-release term. The federal judgment and docket set out that legal status.

For a precise federal sequence, read the judgment, commitment record, BOP result, and later docket entries. Revocation can return a person to custody after an earlier release. A new arrest can create another local or federal episode. Do not infer current compliance or warrant status from BOP alone.

The federal court clerk can direct access to public orders. PACER can supply docket information, but the signed judgment carries the legal terms. Pair it with BOP's custody record rather than expecting one tool to replace the other.

Pulaski and BOP Records

No federal prison was identified inside Pulaski County. That location fact prevents a common error: labeling NRVRJ as a BOP facility because it may house some federal prisoners. NRVRJ remains a regional jail. Its history's reference to federal inmates does not prove BOP sentence custody or a specific federal contract for one person.

A Pulaski-linked federal defendant may be arrested locally, appear in federal court, remain under Marshals authority, and later be designated to a federal prison elsewhere. Each handoff produces different records. Determine the legal custodian at the date being researched.

If the person only had a Pulaski local case, use NRVRJ and the Pulaski courts. If the person served a Virginia state sentence, use VADOC. The Pulaski County release-record search shows where each custody class fits.

Confirm a Former Federal Inmate

A reliable BOP release check begins with identity and jurisdiction. Confirm the federal case, match the register number, record the release wording and date, then inspect the federal docket for supervised release or later action. Contact BOP when the historical locator is incomplete.

Do not merge BOP and ICE. ICE detention is civil immigration custody and uses its own locator. A person can leave BOP and enter ICE custody, making the BOP release accurate but incomplete as a statement of physical freedom. The receiving record controls that next stage.

When a federal result lists a facility, verify that location through BOP rather than assuming a Pulaski connection means confinement nearby.

Note: BOP release data are federal-only and should never be used to describe an ordinary New River Valley Regional Jail departure.
